When did you file your first patent—and what did you learn?

Filing your first patent can be exciting and overwhelming. Let’s share stories, lessons, and questions about IP.

:brain: No legal advice—just helping each other get smart and stay protected.

My first patent was filed in 2017 and was awarded in 2023. One of the most important things to keep in mind, now that I have done it once, is that the language used in describing your idea, whether it is tangible or intangible, must be so precise and as all-encompassing as possible. The amendments I needed to write were based mostly on making each feature or function crystal clear. It is a great exercise in selecting the most accurate descriptive words for features and function. A thesaurus is a great tool to have on hand!

You’re so right about the importance of being precise with your language when describing your idea. Making sure every feature and function is crystal clear is key, and having a thesaurus on hand is a great tip. Thanks for sharing these helpful insights!

Looking forward to hearing more from you as we all continue to learn from each other.
