Hi @Samantha, happy to be on this journey with you too! Thanks for your insight, and presence, and brilliance, and charm!
Hello everyone,
Iâm Kai Lin, a trained patent agent from Singapore with 10 years of experience in the intellectual property and innovation industry. I have worked with numerous start-up companies, helping them secure patent grants and collaborating with clients to innovate on their inventions. I understand the challenges of protecting ideas and attracting investors. Inventing can be an expensive endeavor, but it has the potential to transform lives and make the world a better place. I would love to contribute to this community to help it grow with brilliant ideas and, possibly, save lives.
Welcome, @kailin!
Weâre really glad youâre here and excited for our community to connect with you and learn from your experience.
Feel free to share more about what youâre currently working on, stories from your time in the field, or any insights and inspiration you think would be helpful to fellow inventors. Your perspective is appreciated, and weâre looking forward to hearing more from you in the chats and threads ahead!
Hi
I am a serial inventor looking to collaborate while move innovations to the marketplace.
Actual priorities are: find a water desalination lab in the coastline to test my prototypes; create a sustainable ecosystem active experimentation center to help and promote actual technologies and science work to be known.
Welcome to the community, Guillermo! ![]()
Excited to have you here. Your vision for water innovation and sustainable experimentation is inspiring. If youâre looking to test your desalination prototypes at a coastal lab, here are a few potential resources you might want to explore:
Desalination Testing Resources
- National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI): A U.S. Department of Energyâbacked hub focused on next-gen desalination and water treatment. They have coastal partners that may be open to collaboration.
- University Research Labs: Institutions like Scripps Institution of Oceanography (CA), Florida Atlantic University (FL), or MITâs J-WAFS Lab often support real-world innovation testing.
- XPrize Water Abundance Challenge (Past Competition): Their team list might give you leads on organizations or experts aligned with your mission.
Sustainable Innovation Communities
- Earthship Biotecture (New Mexico): A world-renowned sustainable living and experimentation center.
- Open Source Ecology: A global movement focused on collaboratively designing sustainable, DIY industrial machines and habitats.
- FabLabs / Makerspaces: Local networks often have fabrication tools and like-minded collaborators to help prototype green tech.
Let us know more about your prototypes or the kind of support youâre seeking and someone in the community may be able to connect you with the right partner or resource.
Glad youâre here and looking forward to seeing your journey unfold!
Thanks.
I am looking for a coastline lab to test my prototypes or rise funds to build one.
I will have meeting in Rice University Water Institute and with Ecolyse lab at College Station, next week.

Hi, My name is Spencer Erickson. I am pursuing my first patent for a type of smart watch wrist band. I made a working prototype through 3D printing, now I am doing my due diligence to try and navigate the patent process as painlessly and smoothly as possible. My initially curiosities are about the possibilities of filing a provisional patent myself, and also how to get an accurate quote for the cost to file a patent for my idea. Also, what is the difference between a patent agent and a patent lawyer. Thanks!
Hey @spencer537, welcome to the community! ![]()
Thatâs awesome, congrats on getting your prototype 3D printed! It sounds like youâre already off to a great start. Filing a provisional patent application (PPA) yourself is definitely possible if youâre willing to do some research and follow the USPTOâs guidelines carefully, it can be a good way to secure your filing date while you refine your invention and explore potential partners or licensing.
As for costs, the USPTOâs filing fees are relatively affordable (especially if you qualify as a micro-entity), but getting an accurate quote for a full utility patent will depend on the complexity of your design and who you work with. A patent agent can file and prosecute patents like a lawyer but typically focuses only on patent work, while a patent attorney can also provide broader legal advice, like licensing or IP disputes.
Youâll find lots of people here whoâve gone through similar steps⌠feel free to post updates or questions as you go. Weâre glad youâre here!
Hello everyone! I am Louis, your fellow entrepreneur. I am hoping to find insight into getting my invention to market. It is currently patent pending. Thank you
